Job Description

This position has responsibility for working in an R&D environment to develop, implement, and troubleshoot new material solutions in support of liquid electrophotography (LEP) digital printing technology product and process development. An educational background and experience in chemistry, materials science, and/or chemical engineering is required in this position. Developing and maintaining a strong partnership with HP Indigo product development teams in Israel is also a requirement.

Job responsibilities for this position include:

  • LEP Materials Technology Development
    • Developing materials solutions to control and deliver required mechanical, electrical, and surface properties in support of HP Indigo digital printing press technology in targeted areas, including:
      • Polymers - spanning polyurethane and compounded rubber formulations
      • Surface modification - to deliver desired surface energy, frictional, and mechanical characteristics
      • Ceramics - for advanced-technology print roller and drum applications

  • Sharing ownership of product and process development throughout all stages, including design, validation, tooling, and manufacturing qualification & process control
  • Coordinating with internal partners and manufacturing suppliers in support of these material & process development goals
  • Materials Science Engineering
    • Carrying out, and assisting in the design of, laboratory experiments to develop new chemical and material formulations that are targeted to meet specified design criteria
    • Designing and implementing efficient experiments and test methods for chemical and material properties testing, characterization, and failure analysis that facilitate product and process development
    • Resolving technical issues associated with components, parts, raw materials, and instrumentation
    • Testing finished prototype and commercial materials for quality and performance characteristics
    • Analysis of chemical and material qualification and performance testing data using statistical methods
  • General Engineering
    • Working in a team environment supporting new product development and stabilization efforts
    • Demonstrating a high level of innovation and initiative in identifying, responding to, and resolving new product and process development issues
    • Documentation of experiment and project results using specified formats and data storage systems
    • Communicating effectively, via verbal and written means, with management, coworkers, and suppliers
    • Ensuring that all work carried out conforms with safety and housekeeping requirements

Qualifications - Internal Education and Experience

  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry strongly preferred, BS in one of these disciplines required
  • Experience working in an industrial laboratory setting desired, with examples of project success to be provided
  • Specific knowledge about or experience working in the following areas is desired:
    • Digital printing technology, including inkjet and electrophotographic printing
    • Polymer (especially polyurethane and compounded rubber material) material formulation and/or synthesis
    • Ceramic material development and production process optimization/control knowledge potentially useful
    • Surface energy or mechanical properties modification and control
    • Familiarity with root cause determination methods for materials characterization and failure analysis activities, including application of information from specific analytical instrumentation (e.g. FTIR, HPLC, GC, SEM, thermal analysis)
  • Demonstrated abilities in the following areas:
    • Project Management skills and technical leadership
    • Applying technical skills and understanding of the fundamentals involved in chemistry or materials science
    • Coordinating work carried out by partners within local lab environment as well as with HP Indigo partners and suppliers
    • Statistical data analysis
    • Working independently to achieve desired results from general objectives
    • Communicating effectively in both verbal and written formats
    • Recording experimental set-up, data, observations, and results in a lab notebook
    • Documenting work by putting together summary reports and presentations
    • Working in and around hazardous chemicals without any adverse health effects
