Position Purpose
The position works on the installation, repair, and maintenance of the College's refrigeration, air conditioning, and chilled water systems in all College buildings. The position also provides service for the ammonia refrigeration system of Thompson Arena ice rink, routine building maintenance services on electrical and HV/AC equipment for all GPO and athletic facilities, and troubleshooting services for off hour emergency response needs.

Under general supervision, the Refrigeration and Air ConditioningMechanic is responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of: a variety of domestic, industrial, and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units such as walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, ice cream cabinets, deep freezers, and evaporative coolers; large systems that provide a variety of air modification functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating, in order to condition the air for buildings, central computer facilities, laboratories and experimental facilities.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Must have a Universal license in refrigeration from a recognized organization.
  • Must be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Working knowledge of and skill and experience in the various aspects of industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems, which includes knowledge of: reciprocating, centrifugal, absorption, low voltage electrical systems and circuitry, the principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, the properties of refrigerants, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant tables, methods to calculate air flow, and pressure temperature characteristics for different systems.
  • Knowledge of ammonia-based refrigeration systems.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, wiring schematics, and other specifications.
  • Knowledge of all relevant safety codes and environmental standards.
  • Ability to follow instructions orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision or as part of team
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates: Driver Safety; Hazard Communication; Lock-out/tag-out; Respirator Training; Fit, and Physical Examination; Working in confined spaces
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some post-secondary technical school training and a 1 to 3 year apprenticeship in refrigeration and/or electrical work preferred.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Responsibilities

  • Traces and locates defects to determine the type and extent of refrigeration repair needed.
  • Makes, visual, audible, and mechanical checks for the proper temperature of conditioned spaces, the proper operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle, proper oil levels, unusual noises, overheated bearings, loose connections, faulty insulation, and frayed or loose belts, gaskets and pulleys.
  • Tightens connections, makes splices, insulates exposed wires, cleans and lubricates moving parts.
  • Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, evaporators and cooling towers.
  • Overhauls valves by adjusting and replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings and aligning motors and fly wheel drives.
  • Replaces belts, fans and fuses.
  • Replaces major portions of various cooling units such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies.
  • Maintains chemical treatment for chilled and condenser water systems.
  • Locates and checks elements such as those which control low side and high side pressure, the temperature of the cooling units, the temperature of the liquid and suction lines, and the running time of various mechanisms.
  • Modifies, alters or substitutes components and elements of the system to meet specified pressure temperature characteristics.
  • Tests units/systems upon completion of repair.
  • Keeps records of refrigerant use in accordance with EPA standards.
  • Operates hoists, holders, and pulleys to remove large units.
  • Must be able to participate in the respiratory protection program to be capable of responding to alarms of the Thompson Ammonia Refrigeration System.
