IFF is seeking a highly motivated Scientist to work in the Advanced Analytical Biosciences group located at the Wilmington, Delaware site. The successful candidate will be part of the Separations group developing primarily GC and GC-MS based bioanalytical methods to support various business problems and research programs.


In this role, close collaboration with scientists of multiple disciplines - chemists, biochemists, micro- and molecular biologists, and fermentation engineers are expected. The successful candidate should be adaptive, self-motivated, with a passion for science, and thriving in a team environment. The position will be located at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Please note that this position is laboratory based.

Responsibilities:

  • Sets up, adjusts, operates, and calibrates laboratory equipment and instruments within the GC and/or GC-MS laboratories.
  • Troubleshoots instrument problems and performs general system maintenance and prepares analytical standards for various projects.
  • Performs standard and routine analyses, analyzes data, and writes reports.
  • Responsible for advanced sample preparation and trains more junior staff in sample preparation methods
  • Conducts independent research with guidance from experienced R&D leader or technical team leader.
  • Authors technical documentation, such as reports, invention disclosures and technical promotion materials.
  • Use computer systems and software programs - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), data acquisition programs - to acquire and document results.
  • Effectively collaborates with colleagues on laboratory techniques, sample preparation, instrumentation, data analysis, documentation, and safety.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline (chemistry, biochemistry, forensic chemistry, chemical engineering) with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of laboratory experience, or a bachelor's degree with 8-10 years' experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience with GC and/or GC-MS sample preparation and analysis
  • Familiarity with Agilent instrumentation and software (OpenLab and MassHunter) is preferred.
  • Experience in complementary analytical methodologies (HPLC, SEC, etc.) considered a plus.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions and protocols for safe handling and the disposal of hazardous agents/reagents, chemicals, and materials
  • Has intermediate knowledge of commonly used chemistry concepts, practices, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate technical information, both oral and written to others, including co-workers, supervisors, and vendors
  • Competence in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and Excel for data manipulation
  • Excellent teamwork ability to contribute to multi-technique solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and changing priorities.
