Job Summary

The VP, Strategy & M&A Business Development for Life Sciences position is a critical role at Avantor and is responsible for strategy development, identifying inorganic growth opportunities, and leading the development of the M&A pipeline for Life Science Research. This role will serve as a member of the Lab Products Portfolio Leadership Team as well as the Strategy and M&A team and will report directly to Avantor's EVP, Strategy and Corporate Development.


POSITION PROFILE

Role is highly strategic and meant to drive the M&A engine for life science research. Candidates will take full responsibility for market deep dives, asset identification and prioritization, and development of the M&A pipeline, including cultivation of M&A target relationships. The role will work very closely with executives to drive internal research, build consensus and make recommendations. They will take the lead in the annual strategic planning exercise for the life science research business and liaise closely with bioproduction & services to drive integrated business strategies. In addition, the role will be expected to have an extensive network of outside KOLs in respective market segments for primary research purposes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with the SVP, Lab Products Portfolio, lead the strategic planning and portfolio evaluation and metrics processes for the Lab Products business
  • Perform gap analysis to business unit portfolio, and define strategic and tactical steps to best position for accelerated growth
  • Prepare market assessments and/or market space gap analysis and identify specific potential targets for acquisition or collaborations. Create business case proposals to generate support from Avantor's broader executive leadership team
  • Develop relationships with target executives and shareholders and manage a funnel of inorganic opportunities including tuck in acquisitions and partnership opportunities
  • Lead various phases of the M&A process including analysis of inorganic strategy and markets, target identification and screening, and business due diligence, and the achievement of business objectives after the close of acquisitions and collaborations. Lead contract negotiations for collaborations
  • Work with life science research business leadership, the strategy and M&A team, & executive leadership to support transaction approval processes
  • Prepare and present new business opportunities to senior leaders
  • Contribute to a collaborative, diverse, equitable, and inclusive high performance culture

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience (7+ years) and success in M&A business development in the life sciences, specifically focused on market and target evaluations and cultivation, development, and management of a M&A pipeline, including relationships with target ownership. A broad network of relationships with KOLs and life science research companies preferred
  • Passionate about developing new inorganic growth vectors for an acquisitive life science firm
  • Works collaboratively and effectively in matrixed, multinational environments
  • Strong strategy development capabilities, including facilitating leadership teams through strategic planning processes and building consensus around strategic priorities
  • Demonstrated interest in and support for developing diverse, equitable, and inclusive high performance teams
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), sciences/engineering, and/or PhD highly preferred. Life Science industry experience in technology areas such as genomics or cell biology or proteomics a must

Avantor is committed to equitable compensation practices. The compensation range for this role is:

$190,000.00 - $304,000.00

Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as minimum and preferred qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and location.
