HDR has an exceptional opportunity for a Senior Rail Bridge Engineer serving as the Rail Bridge Lead for the South Atlantic Area (SAA) Transportation Business Group. The position can be based out of Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC; or Atlanta, GA. The Senior Rail Bridge Engineer and Lead will provide oversight and direction to the SAA freight rail bridge staff and coordinate with SAA Rail Section Lead and SAA Structures Section Lead. This position has three primary goals: lead staff and serve as Engineer-of-Record on bridge projects, provide technical guidance and leadership on projects, and maintain operational oversight ensuring we are providing timely and quality service on projects to our clients, on schedule and on budget, while meeting HDR internal financial goals.

In the role of Senior Rail Bridge Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Coordinate with our SAA Rail Section Lead and SAA Structures Section Lead to balance staff workload, provide/identify staff training opportunities, and identify/pursue business development opportunities
  • Lead the development of rail bridge and other structural design plans, specifications, and cost estimate for a variety of projects with Class I railroads, shortlines, industrial, local DOT, and transit clients as a Project Manager or Task Lead for local and workshare projects
  • Lead technical design for various rail clients.
  • Mentor less-experienced staff. You will be viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design with a proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
  • See that rail bridge work is planned, organized, controlled, and evaluated through proactive project management system
  • Be responsible for preparing/reviewing the project budgets for the rail bridge design section and tracking budget status
  • Independently coordinate work of engineers and balance the project delivery team throughout the entire project development
  • Conduct analyses, develop design solutions, and prepare design drawings, calculations, and specifications for rail bridge engineering projects, including checking calculations and designs done by others
  • Participate in periodic client visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspection, as needed.
  • Lead the development and review of proposals, project scopes, schedules, and budgets
  • Establish client relations and be involved with marketing and proposal development, contractual matters, design, and production meetings
  • Perform quality control reviews of rail bridge design projects.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 10+ years rail bridge/structural design experience
  • 2+ years of leading bridge design tasks or project management of rail projects
  • PE required
  • Proven hands-on experience in all aspects of rail bridge design projects
  • Experience using Microstation, Mathcad, LARSA 4D (or similar structural analysis software), and typical structural analysis programs and bridge design software used in the industry
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of AREMA's Manual for Railway Engineering and other railroad design specifications
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
  • Must be comfortable being viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design and have proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
  • Enjoys mentoring and teaching other staff
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering
  • Preference given to local candidates
