This position is for a Summer 2020 Intern in Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineering located in Redmond, WA.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing materials related technical support to product teams, receiving inspection materials testing, wet chemistry analysis, metallography, hardware cleanliness verification, processing development support, failure analysis, and manufacturing process development.

This internship will contribute to the candidate’s ability to enter the Materials and Processes (M&P) Engineering discipline as an entry-level engineer (after graduation).

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

70% - Provide Materials Engineering support for propulsion hardware design, fabrication and test. Assist in the selection of materials for product application, the calculation of design allowables from literature and experimental data, the performance of material properties testing, and the generation of technical reports and presentations to document technical conclusions/findings.

30% - Coordinate test activities in the laboratories.

Requirements

Must be enrolled in a BS program in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related major, and completing junior year of study.

  • Current enrollment in a MS program in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Metallurgical Engineering also considered.

Candidates must have the ability to work in a team oriented environment, have excellent problem solving skills, interpersonal and communication skills. Organizational and strong computer knowledge is mandatory. Solid academic track record expected.

Hands-on experience with Metallography, AAS, UV-VIS Spectrometry, FTIR equipment, Ion Chromatography, or Automated titrators is desirable. Some experience in an industrial setting is also desirable (i.e co-op or internship), as well as demonstrated proficiency in practical application of engineering principles, or quality systems support.

Familiarity with Materials Specifications and working knowledge of ASTM test procedures are a plus.

US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat.

These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
